Sophia Palaiologina (1449-1503) was a Byzantine princess who grew up in the papal court and married Tsar Ivan III of Moscow. She solidified the link between Byzantium and Russia through her bloodlines. And she played a key role in reforming Moscow’s visual language and standing as a cosmopolitan capital through her rich collection of objects, erudition, and interpersonal connections.
