Lisa Hayden is a Russian literary translator and creator of the blog Lizok’s Bookshelf, one of the most comprehensive web resources about classic and contemporary Russian literature. Hayden won a 2014-2016 Read Russia Translation Prize for contemporary literature for her translation of Eugene Vodolazkin’s extraordinary novel Laurus, a spiritual and historical odyssey about a medieval doctor, pilgrim, and holy fool.
In this program, Hayden will discuss her approach to literary translation, and describe the particular challenges of translating the remarkably rich panoply of language Vodolazkin used for Laurus, which Hayden compares to the “cultural strata … found during an archaeological dig.” She will be signing copies of Laurus, which will be available for sale in the Museum Shop.
